What Can We Do About Cyberbullying?

There should be a school wide assembly to show the students that it is a very serious topic and a very relevant topic going on about cyberbullying. With so much technology in schools now the teachers and staff members need to show the students that cyberbullying is not going to be tolerated. Middle school is a very tough couple of years for students and having their peers bully them does not help. It ruins students’ self-esteem and students can get arrested for Taken from YouTube, created by Erika Stanford with camtasia cyberbullying when it gets to the point where it makes someone take their own life. There should be real life examples shown of student’s cyberbullying someone else and the effects it has on the student. They should real police reports and consequences of students charged with cyberbullying when it comes to the point that the student took their own life. Real life examples show students that it could happen to anyone and they should not engage in anything that might be deemed as cyberbullying. Showing that all the staff members are united against cyberbullying shows the students it will not be tolerated in their school.
Students in charge of
running lessons on cyberbullying will show that peers think it is wrong to do as well and will then inspire other students to take a stand against cyberbullying as
well. Teachers could elect some students that are interested in cyberbullying
and they could receive special training. They would learn more about
cyberbullying and what the effects it could have of others and different ways
it could happen. Also, they can become educated on the school rules of
cyberbullying so they will be around to answer any question other students might
have about cyberbullying. They will then be in charge of small groups and run a
lesson about cyberbullying with their peers. Showing that students are against
cyberbullying provided students with another safe person of authority to help guide
someone if they feel like he or she is being cyberbullied. They can direct them
to a safe adult better equipped to handle the situation and make sure the student
feels safe. Students talking to other students about cyberbullying helps them
better connect to the situation being talked about and relate more to each
other and feel more comfortable asking question then having a teacher or
another person of authority lecture them about it.

Parents need to be aware
of the sign of cyberbullying. Their child could start acting upset when using
the computer or phone; they might even stop using their cell phone altogether. They
might start not wanting to go to school and seem to be withdrawing from their
normal life and begin to act depressed or notice a dramatic changes in the child’s
normal routine. If a parent thinks their
child is being cyberbullied they should approach them in a supportive understanding
way so they know it is not their fault they are being cyberbullied. As a parent
you will have to tell them you will be there for them and support them and help
them through it. Parents that threaten to ground their kids from the computer
are the reason why kids keep it a secret that they are being cyberbullied for the
fear they will get in trouble for it. Parents need to be supportive and
understanding so kids feel safe coming to them so cyberbullying will end. Reach
out to your children if you think something is not right so they know you are
there for them. Keep checking in on them
if they were being cyberbullied so you can make sure the problem goes away and
your child feels safe using technology again.
Parents need to be aware
of what their children are doing on their computers, tablets and cell phones. Kids
today have access to so much technology that they can easily connect themselves to
someone else or to any social media to post anything from a comment to a
picture or video. Parents need to set rules for their child on what they can
and cannot do on the internet so they are less likely to get in trouble and
they understand what they are allowed to do online. Parents should talk to
their kids about what is right to post online and use the internet for and what
are bad things they should not do on it. Parents should also talk about how
other people might try and post mean and hurtful things about them on the
internet and how they are always free to come to talk to them if they feel like
they are being bullied online. Set rules for social media and if the child is
secretive about what they are doing on the internet parents should become more
involved and figure out why. Ask for your child’s password but say you are only
going to use it in an emergency. Make sure you as a parent feel comfortable with
all the social media and texting your child has access to and be aware of the
dangers that come along with it.
Parent and schools should
work together to be united against cyberbullying. Showing that both at school
and at home cyberbullying is not okay will provide a stronger campaign to end
cyberbullying. Also, showing that there is support at school and at home will
help students feel more comfortable talking to an adult if they are being
cyberbullied. Creating a safe community helps show others that cyberbullying is
not okay and no one supports it or will tolerate it at school or at home. Taking
a stand against cyberbullying will help prevent future cyberbullying from
happening. It just takes one person to hurt someone so badly over the internet
that they want to take their own life. People need to take a stand and stop
cyberbullying from hurting and/or taking any more lives. Standing up to
cyberbullies can save someone’s life.
